Acupuncture & oriental medicine

Acupuncture is an essential part of traditional oriental medicine, a comprehensive system of health care with a clinical history of over 3000 years. Oriental medicine includes acupuncture, Chinese herbology and massage, dietary therapy , and exercise based on traditional Oriental medicine principles (Qigong).

The basic philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine is to find the root or cause of illness, rather than merely relieving symptoms, as often is the model of Western medicine. The goal is to achieve a state of balance (of Yin & Yang) in mind and body.

All Modalities Are:

Natural: There are no unwanted side effects.
Holistic: All aspects of your health are discussed in order to find the underlying causes.
Personalized: Treatment is individually designed to take into account constitutional differences.

Treatment

An initial visit will take about 1.5 hours, during which we will discuss your current health problems, your medical history, and you will receive treatment. Follow-up treatments are usually 1 hour. The acupuncture treatment will take no longer than 30 minutes. In some cases, you may also be recommended herbs, dietary therapy, Qigong, massage or life style changes.

Modalities

Acupuncture holds the idea that Qi (energy) flows through the body via a system of channels or meridians. Along these meridians are specific points at which the insertion of needles can access the Qi and influence or regulate its flow.

Herbology also affects the Qi. Often it is combined with acupuncture to achieve a greater effect. Usually herbs are combined into formulas, based on ancient recipes. Formulas can be adapted to meet your needs. We take into account any prescription drugs you might already be taking, and pay careful attention to dosage and combination of herbs to avoid any drug-herb interaction.

Massage (Tuina) is often used as part of your treatment or as a treatment alone. Whether you are in need of relaxation or have an injury, we will tailor your massage to accomplish either goal. Some treatments will include stretching, which we will teach to you so you can practice at home.

Qigong is an ancient system of self-cultivation of protecting and promoting your health & vitality. Qigong (much like Tai Chi) is a gentle, meditative, fun and easy to learn Chinese exercise. Classes are designed so you will be able to practice on your own after finishing a series of classes.
